What to expect in Afterschool Piano

At the beginning of learning piano, the best approach I have seen that prepares students for progressing through musical challenges right away is when first placing a focus on building the language about the instrument. Music itself is a language, and so first building a solid vocabulary of the words frequently used can be very helpful when communicating to guide students before they begin learning how to read and play notes on a staff.

After introducing common words, students are introduced to foundational concepts through a step-by-step sequence that would typically be found in a Royale Piano private piano lesson. Over the 15 weeks, through a series of fun exercises and supplied theory worksheets, your child will gain an understanding of:

  • Finger Numbers - The fingers you use to play a particular key or note

  • Notes and their values

  • The Musical Alphabet

  • The Grand Staff (Treble and Bass Clef)

  • Intervals

  • Octaves

  • Rhythm

  • Time signatures and how to count musical beats

  • Sharps and Flats

  • Dynamics

  • Hand shapes, positions

  • How to read notes on the Grand Staff

  • How to coordinate both left and right hand while playing independent lines of melody

  • How to identify a musical phrase and build a pattern library

  • How to play scales and arpeggios

  • How to practice at home

  • How to compose music

  • How to record music

Every concept covered will include a guided, specific piano exercise or song that will help reinforce what is learned throughout the class. Our afterschool piano course will also supply keyboards for each student to practice on and will also provide books.
