Miss Amanda

A good piano teacher can professionally inspire the student

“It is the right of every citizen to be taught the basic elements of music, to be handed the key with which he can enter the locked world of music. To open the ear and heart of the millions to understand music poses a serious challenge…”

-Zoltán Kodály

ABOUT MY BACKGROUND — I grew up during the start of the 90’s in Silicon Valley and started formal music education training at age 4 in classical and jazz piano at a Russian piano school called Almaden School of Music. The rigorous training and competitive was intense, I was enrolled for 7 years before deciding leave.

A few years later, my family relocated to Southern California at the start of the technology boom. During this time in my life was when I decided to self-educate on music. I began composing pieces made with my high school friend. We would sit for hours at the piano, cracking jokes and creating sketches based on the silly things we saw at school. We eventually ended up writing a whole musical named after one of the most popular kids in school. We composed over 15 original pieces, each sequenced to fit the storyline of a boy struggling to fit in to his new school and the awkward conversation he would have with new friends. The comedy musical “Blake Jones” won immense attention and admiration from our peers. That was a one-time musical premiere, never to be performed again. I began writing more seriously at age 16 and wrote a number of pieces for pop electronic music genres and indie. I performed several of these original pieces at college events while attending San Francisco State University pursuing a degree in Communication Studies. You can find some of these still uploaded on Soundcloud: soundcloud.com/bunnyvilla

After starting my first year in college in 2011, I demonstrated a piano piece transcribed from one of my favorite video game soundtracks (FFX) to one of my piano teachers. I was then offered a job as a piano instructor for a piano teaching company called Keyboard Educators. I officially started my music teaching journey at age 20, graciously mentored by teachers and virtuosi musicians from all across San Francisco and the Bay Area, as well as San Francisco Conservatory of Music, graduates from Thornton School of Music of USC and Juilliard School. Using their insights, I developed a teaching stratagem that “tricks you into the right answer”, properly sequencing educational material that presented core concepts in a way that nicely helps children form brain connections needed to build a strong, lasting foundation in music training.

A few years later, I moved back to be closer to my family and transferred to Cal State San Marcos in 2014. That year I began offering piano group lessons and 1:1 instruction to individuals of all ages, traveling to homes and churches across San Diego and Orange County while completing my B.A in Visual Performing Arts & Music Technology. Shortly after graduating in 2017, I moved to the Pacific Northwest to obtain more professional experience and possibly expand my traveling music service. It has been a privilege to serve and to teach the joy of music to an increasing number of children and adults in church settings, private and public schools, daycares and homes since 2012.
